Up at the Stars by Gojira007

One of two entries I've made for 's Valentine's Day Shipping Contest.

"I'll admit, you never struck me as a stargazer..."

Princess Sally's voice caught Sonic by surprise, but as always the hedgehog kept his cool and merely returned her wry observation with a likewise grin. "Maybe you just haven't been payin' enough attention," he retorted playfully, subtly stepping to the side as the squirrel approached to give her room in front of the tree he'd staked out as his "spot" for the night.

Sitting down in the cool grass, Sally's own eyes turned upwards after a chuckle and a shake of her head. Their repartee abruptly closed, the two looked up into the soft glow of the sky, dotted as it was with moonlight and stars. "What do you think about, when you look at them?" Sally asked, knowing full well who she was talking to and thus the slim odds the answer she would get would be anything noteworthy...but still wanting to ask the question.

To her shock, Sonic's hand gently slid down across her shoulders, a warm smile on his face as his eyes continued to gaze into the starlight. "What I'm fightin' for," he told her simply but sincerely.

The squirrel tried to think up an appropriate reply to match the brief swell in her heart, but found no words suitable. Eventually, she decided the best answer she could give was to wrap her arm around his.

They stayed that way 'til sunrise.
