The Last Night

“Asgore…please.  Take it back.  Tell them you were wrong.  Tell them that more death is not…cannot be the answer.”

She reaches out to him.
He takes her hand, gently.

“Tori…I can’t.”

He closes his eyes; he cannot bear to look at hers.   

“Those words…the order I gave…it was a promise.  And that promise is the one thing with the power to give our people hope now.”

His body trembles, but his hands are steady. 

“For that power…the power to keep our people alive…I would kill a thousand humans.” 

Toriel rips her hand away from Asgore, stepping back from him.
Tears are slowly streaming down her face now, shaking her head.
He steps gently toward her, opening his eyes now, sadness peeking through the mask at last.    

“Tori, please…you must understand.  You must see how this is necessary.”

She is trembling now.  Her voice is a whisper…       

“…I must see…?”

…but there is anger in it. 

“How dare you.”

Her hands are alive with flame; she is still weeping, but her enraged gaze is fixed squarely on Asgore.

“HOW DARE YOU STAND ON OUR SON’S GRAVE AND ASK ME THAT?”

She points a blazing, accusing finger at Asgore. 

“HOW DARE YOU PRESUME MY UNDERSTANDING, WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO WALLOW IN YOUR INDULGENT PAIN?”   

The flames intensify.

“WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO TURN YOUR BACK ON EVERYTHING THAT MATTERED TO US?”

Her angered expression slips into one of grief. 

“THE THINGS I LOVED ABOUT YOU?”
