Krys'yl cuddled the small ball of orange fur and dark-brown skin close to her chest.  She could hear the infant's heart beating just so, her little chest rising and falling with breath.  It was hard to believe such an innocent creature had been born into a world as harsh and unforgiving as the Poacher's Camp, but here they were.  Alpha Nin had given her permission to take the young girl as her own after she had helped the Rescue Team, and as she looked at the sleeping child on their first night home together, she vowed with all her heart that it would be so.  "You were born to cruelty," she whispered to the baby, "but here...you will know only Love.  I promise."

With time, Aryatl "Sumres" Scosumresilla went from being a fragile little baby to being a young girl with a wonderful smile and a laugh her mother cherished.  It was in those rare moments when she laughed, after all, that her adopted daughter shed the veil of fear that hung over her head every day.  She was a naturally-timid child.  It was rare that she spoke, and she spent little time with her fellow cubs around the Village; instead, her days were mostly spent indoors, drawing images in the dirt or playing with her mother.  "It worries me," Krys'yl would tell her son, Kei'lys.  "I do not begrudge her her shyness...I love her, every inch as much as I love you, and I know not all of us can be outgoing or bold.  But I fear...I fear she clings to me rather than dare to face the world, and that is no way for a Bemy to live."

So one day, on Sumres' 12th birthday, Krys'yl convinced her to go with her on a little trip outside the Village.  "It won't be too far," she promised, "and we won't be gone too long.  There's just something I want to show you."

Sumres was hesitant at first, but she loved her mother enough to go along with it.  The two ventured to a forest not far from the Village, finding a high cliff that overlooked a nearby valley.  There was a herd of Frostbucks galloping through below, and Krys'yl guided her daughter toward the cliff so she could see them.  Sumres, however, refused to follow.  "It's noisy," she whispered, "and we might fall...."

"I'm here," Krys'yl said with soft strength, "I will not let you fall, and the noise cannot hurt you."

She offered her hand to the child.  Sumres looked at it, trembling, but then she looked at her mother's eyes and nodded, placing her shaky hand in Krys'yl's.

Together, the two simply watched the Frostbucks make their way through the Valley.  Despite her initial fear, Sumres could not help but admire the elegance...the power.  She had seen her mother bring back Frostbucks dead, for eating, and it made her appreciate both her mother for being able to catch one, and the Frostbucks for being such worthy prey.  "They're...beautiful," she said softly."

"This world is full of many things," Krys'yl told her daughter, "Some of them beautiful, some of them terrible...many of them both.  I know how much there is that you fear, Sumres, but it is only by confronting the terrible that we can find the beautiful, and I want you to have that in your life.  I want you to be able to live as you should, even without me."

Despite Krys'yl's earlier promise, the two wound up staying on that cliff until nightfall.

That day marked a change in Sumres.  She never stopped being shy, but she learned better how to work through her fears.  Like her Mother, she became a Scout, and a trusted one at that.  But she would always remember why: the world had beauty and terror in it, and it was all hers to discover.

Sumres is supercute - and the way you bring her a little more out in the world is sweet and convincing. And it's always nice to see a little more Krys'yl!
